Custom Blinds & Shades in Mebane, NC

Mebane is the easternmost town we cover, where the Triad starts to give way to the Triangle. It is newer to our route, so what follows is sourced fact about the houses and how we would measure them, not a list of past jobs.

The city straddles a county line. Most of it is in Alamance, two small pieces on the east side are in Orange, and most local numbers still use 919 even though the rest of Alamance moved to 336. It has also grown fast. The census went from 11,393 people in 2010 to 17,797 in 2020.

What we see in Mebane homes

That growth splits the housing in two. A large share of the houses went up in the last couple of decades. The center of town is about a century older, and the window questions change from one side to the other.

Old South Mebane is the grid of numbered streets just below downtown. It was listed on the National Register in 2011, and its nomination dates the houses from around 1900 to the early 1960s. The styles run from Queen Anne and Craftsman bungalows to Minimal Traditional cottages and Ranch houses, mostly wood frame. The survey found the one-over-one double-hung sash was the usual original window.

A one-over-one sash is a good candidate for an inside mount if the jamb has room to clear the sash lock. Age is the complication. A frame that has stood a hundred years may have racked out of square, so we measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom and compare the diagonals. If they disagree by much, an outside mount gives the cleaner result.

The nomination also says many of these houses now have replacement sash. A new unit fitted inside an old frame gives up depth and width compared with the original. If replacement windows are coming, put them in first. Measuring for treatments before that means paying for the measure twice.

Downtown is a separate National Register district, roughly two blocks of brick commercial buildings on Center, Clay, Third, and Fourth streets, built across the first sixty years of the 1900s. Many have offices or apartments upstairs. Those upper windows sit in solid brick. A roller or Roman shade for one of them is built to the drop we measure, because a stock length rarely lands right.

The newer subdivisions are the easy part. Window sizes repeat from room to room, so a whole-house order prices quickly. The conversation there is mostly about dark bedrooms and privacy from the house next door.

Listed does not mean restricted

Old South Mebane and the downtown district are both National Register listings. Federal listing places no limits on a private owner unless federal money or permits are involved. Interior treatments need no one’s approval.

Anchoring into brick

Mortar in the downtown buildings has been repointed over the years, so a reveal can change depth from one end of the head to the other. We check it in several spots before choosing an inside mount. Brackets go into the masonry with anchors, since there may be no wood behind the trim.

Questions

Common questions from Mebane homeowners

Is Mebane really in your service area?

It is, on both the Alamance and Orange County sides, with no trip charge. Alamance County makes up the Burlington metro, which puts most of Mebane in the Triad on paper. The free estimate is the same one we do in Clemmons.

Can we leave the original trim untouched in an older house?

Yes. An outside mount fastened to the wall above the casing never touches the frame. If you do go inside, the bracket screws are short and the holes are easy to fill later.

We just closed on a new build. When should you measure?

Once trim and paint are finished. Window returns can shift by an eighth of an inch or more as drywall and paint go on, which is enough to spoil an inside mount.
